5 Tips for Natural Light in Your Home
(That Make Photos Shine)

A simple guide to help your in-home session feel bright, calm, and beautiful

One of the most common questions I hear before an in-home session is:

“Do I have enough light in my home for photos?”

And my answer is usually this:
Yes—and I’ll help you find it.

Natural light is a big part of what gives lifestyle newborn and family sessions their soft, dreamy glow. But you don’t need floor-to-ceiling windows or a picture-perfect home. With a few simple tweaks, your everyday space becomes the perfect backdrop for honest, beautiful memories.

Here are five ways to make the most of the light you already have:

1. Open the Curtains and Blinds

This might seem obvious, but many families don’t realize just how much softer and more flattering natural light is compared to overhead lights.

When I arrive, we’ll turn off lamps and artificial lights (which often create yellow shadows) and let the window light lead the way. Even small windows can create beautiful results.

Quick Tip: If you have blackout curtains, slide them aside completely before your session.

2. Tidy Near the Brightest Windows

You don’t need to clean your whole house—just focus on 1–2 rooms with great window light (usually the nursery, bedroom, or living room).

Clear away clutter near windows and let me handle the rest. I may move a chair or blanket for better light, but I’ll always work gently within your space.

Your space doesn’t have to look “photo ready.” It just has to be yours.

3. Choose Neutral or Light-Colored Bedding

If we’ll be photographing in your bedroom, light-colored sheets or a neutral comforter can reflect light beautifully and help baby’s skin tones shine.

You don’t need to buy anything new—just avoid bold patterns or dark colors if you can.

pro-tip: a plain white sheet can be an instant photo-ready background.

4. Turn Off Overhead Lights and Lamps

It may feel counterintuitive, but artificial lights often compete with the natural glow we’re aiming for. By turning them off, we avoid mixed color tones and shadows—and your photos will look cleaner and more timeless.

I’ll walk you through all of this when I arrive—no need to remember every detail.

5. Trust Me to Find the Best Spots

Even if you think your home is “too dark” or “too small,” I promise—I’ve worked in every kind of space, and I’m trained to find the angles and light that work best. Sometimes the best photo of the day happens next to a single window or even in the hallway.

Your job? Just relax and be present.
I’ll handle the light.
